Gant By Michael Bastian Spring/Summer 2014
Those of you who follow The Refined Gent on Facebook have more than likely seen the great work from Michael Bastian‘s collections in past seasons. Well Michael and his team were kind enough to share with me his Spring/Summer 2014 collection for Gant. He has always wanted to do a nautical inspired collection which he did beautifully this season. The inspiration came from Ridley Scott’s film, White Squall — a story that takes place in the Kennedy era about a crew of American students who navigate through an epic sailing adventure.
The styling pays homage to days spent at sea with a balance of American sportswear and youthful athleticism. His choice of colors are cohesive, comprised of off-white, summer sky blue, lotus yellow, sandy beige and dusty grey combined with accents of navy and sun-bleached Nantucket red. Key pieces include a vintage madras blazer inspired directly from the film, a beige cargo pant, washed deconstructed canvas blazers, fitted cargos, chopped off shorts and a jacquard cloud sweater. Michael’s attention to detail is evident with his use of real mother of pearl buttons, glen plaid linens and vintage tie print shirting.
Michael says, “the whole vibe of the film White Squall really spoke to me — in time period and in spirit. If you go back and watch it, you will see many references in the new collection, in both key clothing and accessories, as well as the label treatment. The general look of Kennedy era 1960′s American Sportswear mixed these young guys on a boat working together as a team — it feels very Gant in a way.”
My thanks goes out to Michael Bastian and Douglas Geller at Gant for allowing TRG to share these details and images with our viewers. I hope you enjoy the collection as much as I did. Bravo Michael! Another job well done!!
