Michael Bastian Spring/Summer Collection 2014
Our mantra here at TRG is to report on men’s current fashion and trends; but given that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is upon us here in NYC, I am writing up a special blog post on one of TRG’s favorite menswear designers, Michael Bastian. Many of you who follow The Refined Gent on Facebook know that we are big fans of his work and often reference fashionable ensembles of this extraordinary American designer. The Michael Bastian team was kind enough to share with TRG, details and inspiration for their Spring/Summer 2014 Collection show, along with runway photos that I’m confident you will enjoy as much as I have.
Michael says, “his inspiration initially came from observing the French men in his life, as well as movies such as The Red Balloon, The Dreamers and films from Jacques Tati.” He also references the late American luxury designer Patrick Kelly. “Patrick Kelly—no one loved Paris more than he did. Patrick’s vision of Paris–bright, romantic, frenetic, sexy and chic–is the one thing that stays with me.”
Michael combined bright joyful colors with washed out and light colors such as sage green, light grey, cadet blue and stone to create a symphonic harmony. The fabric selections ranged from stonewashed linen, cotton/linen canvas, cashmere, printed nylon, cotton sheeting, fleece, suede, fine gauze knits and printed cotton/linen. His ability to mix patterns as well as fabrications was done remarkably well. His interpretation of “tailored prep meets Euro carefree” resulted in a sartorial gent on holiday. The unexpectedly styling in a loose, sexy way, is how he personifies the best in French men’s style.
His meticulous attention to detail in styling the models was collaborated with various accessory brands such as Randolph Engineering, Stubbs & Wootton, G-Frost, Mr. Kim and X Frank Clegg — all of which created an exceptional collection especially for Michael.
My thanks goes out to Michael Bastian and Stefanie Leke at The Eighth Floor for allowing us at TRG to take in his wonderful SS2014 show at the Hotel Pierre, through these details and images they have shared with us. I hope you enjoy the collection as much as I did. Bravo Michael! Job well done!!
