Pop-Up With Michael Bastian
Usually designers will take a common approach to opening a pop-up shop to sell their collection. That’s clearly not the case when it comes to American luxury menswear designer Michael Bastian. Michael’s collaboration with Bittertang a year in the making, transcends the somber mood of the collection. Here are some images I personally photographed this past weekend.
The first impression of a 20-foot tall bale of hay is a canopy for what lies underneath, a mysterious hidden world. A subtle opening to the cavernous shop gives you access to the the first room called the wax room. It is backlit to give the bright yellow glow and and emit sweet smells. There, you will find some special pieces of the collection that include slippers as well as custom built furniture created for the shop. The precise detailing in the artwork is synonymous with Michael’s attention to detail in his collections.
The space leads into the next room where you can purchase Michael’s fall collection. In addition to the clothing, you will find the collection of jewelry by designer G Frost, who collaborates with Michael from season to season. There are some clever knitted pieces from Josh Bennett to include gloves and a Ouija-board sweater that hangs beautifully illuminated on the wall.
If you are or will be in NYC, the shop is located at SuperPier at 15th street and Hudson River Park. The store will be open until November 21st. We highly recommend stopping by and viewing a work of art from two brilliant artisans Michael Bastian and the team of Bittertang Antonio Torres and Michael Loverich.
